Distinguished Council Members and Members of WGDO,

Today, it is with a deep sense of mission and responsibility that I formally assume the position of President of the Third Global Council of the World Green Design Organization (WGDO). First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all members, partners, and the members of the previous two Councils for their trust and support in electing me to this important role. This is a moment of great personal honour for me, but also one of deep responsibility to promote the development of green design throughout the world to new heights.

For more than four decades, I have dedicated myself to research on global environmental governance, environmental planning for China, ecological civilization and green development, and have worked on the accounting of green GDP and Gross Ecosystem Product (GEP), contributing to the policy and technical system for a Beautiful China. In addition, I have collaborated with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and research institutions from major developed countries on numerous environmental projects. Over years of research and practice, I have developed a deep understanding of the systemic role green design plays in achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Moving forward, drawing on my expertise and global vision, I will continue to work with my colleagues to address the ecological challenges facing the world.

Green design represents not only an evolution of theconcept of sustainable development but a crucial engine for global sustainability. It is integral to realizing the SDGs, particularly in areas such as climate governance, clean energy transformation, urban resilience, and biodiversity protection. Green design enables the optimization of industrial and energy structures, reduces carbon footprints, and helps safeguard our climate. From green buildings to sustainable transportation, green design in these areas facilitates the systematic reduction of resource consumption, enhances the efficiency of the circular economy, and drives industrial transformation. Featuring inclusive technologies and services, green design helps developing countries shift away from the traditional development model of high-pollution, thereby accelerating an equitable transition worldwide. WGDO firmly holds the belief that green design is the “golden key” to solving environmental issues at their source and serves as a universal language for a clean and beautiful world.

Since the establishment in Brussels, Belgium, 2013, WGDO has emerged as an authoritative platform for green design worldwide. Over the past decade, we have reached the following milestones:

WGDO has forged partnerships with design organizations, scientific institutions, and enterprises committed to promoting ecological development in 42 countries and regions, with over 600 organizations and experts becoming our members. To date, we have branches and regional centers in 14 countries, and the current Council brings together members from 22 countries, creating an interdisciplinary platform for green design.

WGDO has initiated the development of international green design standards across 12 sectors, including green products, energy, and transportation, providing the industry with clear, standardized frameworks to guide design.

Moreover, WGDO has continuously instituted the“Green Design International Award” and the “Green Design International Contribution Award” to recognize innovative works in green design. We have unveiled the“Green Haven” (Brussels) proposal and the “World Green Design Capital” initiative to incentivize the sustainable practices of cities and businesses. We are also in the process of establishing“Global Green Development Think Tank” , offering strategic advice to support balanced green growth across the world.

WGDO has developed partnerships with multiple UN agencies and EU institutions, and has been granted Special Consultative Status to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), deeply engaging in global governance with growing international influence.

All these achievements would not have been possible without the initiative of Academician Lu Yongxiang, former President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, to establish WGDO, and the outstanding leadership of the previous Councils, particularly the pioneering contributions made by former presidents Mr. Shi Dinghuan and Mr. Jo Leinen. Their work has laid a solid foundation for the organization’s global network. We owe them our deepest respect.

The Third Global Council of WGDO will embrace the future with the core principles of “Innovation, Collaboration, and Action” and focus on the following priorities:

First, strengthening organizational capacity. WGDO will support the establishment of national branches and committees, actively expand its membership, and promote the concept of green design to reach more professionals on a global scale. Artificial intelligence and digital tools will be leveraged to build a multilingual communication network for broader outreach.

Second, cultivating green design talent. WGDO will establish a globally recognized “Green Design Engineer” certification system and collaborate with industry organizations and universities worldwide to implement talent development programs, which will enhance the professional competencies of key personnel driving global sustainability. Moreover, green technology databases, sustainable materials libraries and carbon neutrality assessment tools will be integrated into a unified service platform, offering intelligent solutions for green design practitioners.

Third, expanding global partnerships. WGDO will deepen cooperation with international organizations such as the United Nations, the European Union and the African Union, to integrate green design into multilateral climate agendas. In addition, the “World Green Design Capital” initiative will be expanded to support more cities in achieving low-carbon transitions and sustainable development through green design.

Four, accelerating the application and promotion of standards. WGDO will establish dedicated task forces to refine Green Design International Standards in areas such as green construction and smart transportation, and promote their adoption in more countries. More products of the “Green Leaf Mark” program will be certified to guide the public toward green consumption and foster a green production and lifestyle. Green design evaluations for international projects will also be promoted to support the development of eco-friendly infrastructure.

Five, engaging youth and the public. WGDO will mobilize youth worldwide to engage in green design practices through international exchange platforms that empower them to contribute to sustainable development. Public awareness campaigns will also be launched to foster greater understanding and recognition of green design, supporting a sustainable future.

Six, advancing research on the integration of green design and industry. WGDO will strengthen its “Global Green Development Think Tanks” , assemble high-caliber research teams, and publish the World Green Design Report and related studies to drive industry transformation. WGDO will also work with authoritative institutions in multiple countries to evaluate green design practices, providing a foundation for evidence-based policymaking.

Distinguished Council Members and Members of WGDO, the world is currently facing severe challenges, including climate change and biodiversity loss, yet within these crises lie opportunities for transformation. WGDO will adopt an open mindset and pragmatic actions to pool global wisdom, turning green design from a concept into a force that can reshape our world. During the Third Council term, we look forward to working with all of you to develop WGDO into a “strategic think tank,” “operational task force,” and “global collaboration hub” that leads the global green revolution.

Let us unite, with green design as our tool and sustainability as our mission, to leave a vibrant, clean, and beautiful planet for future generations.

    Sincerely,
